Jessica (or, the anatomy of a spam post)

This has been sat in my drafts folder for a little while now, and I feel like after my last post a little mood-lightening is in order.

I’ve recently changed jobs, and while I can say that I am having a great time in my new place of work, it was a tough decision to leave Webdurance and I’ll always be grateful for the things I learnt there and the generally fantastic and wacky time I had.

One of the things I dealt with on a fairly regular basis while I worked there was spam posts. When you are working in the realms of blogging and content creation it’s really impossible not to, but that doesn’t mean they ever really get boring. This one popped up in my spam filter a couple of months ago and it tickled me so much that I couldn’t help but share it. The following is an actual post that some robot wanted my to accept on my blog (complete, of course, with commentary)

hello
[Let’s start as we mean to go on, by not capitalising anything]
http://www.sallysteph.co.uk admin
[That’s my name!..oh no wait, that is not my name. Though my actual name is plastered everywhere around here…poor botty job]
have you wondered what’s the secret how big company websites get massive targeted traffic and exposure in Google 1st page results for the biggest and toughest keywords?
[Technically, before I worked in webby stuff, yes, but I don’t now. Now, I know. Also, even when that might have crossed my mind, I wouldn’t have worried about it applying to my tiny personal blog. Also also, this is just a terrible sentence.]

Answer is simple links,
[Oh right then, go on]
but only quality links which counts as votes for your site
[Hey guys, you can give votes to my site! Vote for me!]
giving Google no choice but to shoot your site rankings to #1 results so your customers can see your site at the top of Google search results.
[I have no customers. As previously mentioned, this is a tiny personal blog. It’s like you’ve not even read it]
Today is your lucky day
[#excited]
because I’m going to reveal you secret resource of best of the best links from 500’000 website network!
[Oh wow, 500’000 website network! Is that a network of 500,000 sites, or is that the name of a network? Also, please don’t “reveal me” because that is creepy, and not up to you]
Yes that’s correct not some tiny 500 site network but half a million.
[Okidoke, back with you now. It’s half a million websites in a network. Great.]

*Links from real established, authority English actual PR pages with low outbound links max 10
[So now we’re bulleting? Fine. Authority English actual is not what you have in actual English, clearly]
* Skyrocket your website rankings for your website related keyword and get massive laser
[This deal just got sweeter. I am all about a massive laser]
targeted traffic,
[Oh]
customers and $$$ in your bank account.
[Excuse me sir, but this is Britain donchaknow. Dollars are of no use to you here]
Forget about thousands of crap directory and forum links which will do nothing bust just hurt your website rankings.
[This is not actually entirely wrong. Apart from the misspelling of “but”]
Get the real deal at http://next-gen-traffic.net
[Link removed because it seems a bit crazy to do a joke piece about spammers but then actually give them links. No no.]
Yes that’s the future of link building
[Well, if it’s the future then naturally I’m sold. Glad you mentioned it]
After my site is now at #1 position in Google
[After…what?]
I think http://next-gen-traffic.net is the game changer in seo world!
[Respectfully, I do not. Also, articles.]
Your friend Jessica.
[You are a robot, and your name is not Jessica. Or, much more worryingly, you aren’t a robot. However, I’m ready to bet your name still isn’t Jessica]

I’m still getting some great spam, but Jessica has definitely been a highlight. Now, this has been very successful procrastination, but it’s probably time to get on and do some work. Ah well.

Stop Press

I was working, and then I procrastinated on Facebook, and then it felt like time to write something about Charlie Hebdo.

We live in a remarkable world where the internet allows us to connect with hundreds of thousands of people. And I have been lucky enough in my life to meet a wide variety of people with some great thoughts and fascinatingly disparate viewpoints. It didn’t surprise me at all to find that these were being loudly broadcasted, but it did make me feel strongly like also airing my views (of which I have many, not all organised yet).

Firstly, I don’t think there is any question that what happened at Charlie Hebdo is a tragedy. The ability of one human to destroy another will never cease to horrify me. Loss of life is always a terrible thing.

Secondly, the hashtag #jesuischarlie is trending across the world and huge events are emerging, not only in solidarity with the French people, but in the name of freedom of expression and protecting it.

Thirdly, I don’t think there is any question that some of the art featured in Charlie Hebdo over the years has been in slightly (and sometimes incredibly) poor taste. I am a great fan of satire as a way to explore the flaws in society and create something entertaining which forces people to take a good look at their own views – but it can be overdone, or simply done in a way which is ultimately offensive and not intelligent.

Now, put these three things together, and you get the explosion of arguments which I have seen across my Facebook feed all day. I honestly didn’t know much about Charlie Hebdo, but a few hours of research has brought me to the following final conclusion:

Freedom of expression is important, and it’s appropriate that it was the French writer Voltaire who came out with the famous quote “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”. However, Charlie Hebdo did venture worryingly close to pure racism, and that isn’t something to applaud. The key thought here though, is that people using the hashtag #jesuischarlie aren’t applauding Charlie Hebdo. This isn’t a choice to support a racist publication. This is a statement of sadness at an unconscionable act of violence, and a statement in support of freedom of expression. Suggesting that people don’t use that hashtag isn’t valuable, it’s just an excuse to start an fight. Awareness rarely comes from confrontation on the internet.

This has all been a bit of a jumble, but I think the main point is clear. After what I’ve seen and read today, I’m not a Charlie Hebdo fan. But that doesn’t mean je ne suis pas Charlie. It just means #jesuischarlie and je suis ready to fight violence, hate crime, and limiting freedom of expression, as well as being ready to question a racist publication. That is what je suis.

Almost New Year

Another year, another apology for my lack of blogging as soon as my life got more interesting outside of the internet.

As with every year, I’m coming into January (or will be) with a whole set of things I want to achieve. Number one of course is to finish my masters, with completion finally looming (in that my completion date is October 2015, not in that I’ve actually come close to finishing). Other aims include making a positive start at my new job (more on that in a later post), pulling together an exciting event with Backstage, and being in an opera – this year it is Carmen and I’m once again a man.

This year has been busy – there are still plenty of things I aim to catch up on in the new year, and a whole host of posts in my drafts. One thing it has been though, is amazing – I’ve made new friends, learnt new things, and had loads of great new experiences which I’m going to grow through. It’s been what a year should be, a fantastic learning curve.

Anyway, as is probably obvious, I’m posting this because I know I won’t have time in the next few days, and what is the point of a new year post if it misses the big day? So, with that in mind…

Happy New Year!

I went away

I didn’t actually go away-away (as in, to another place) but I went away from my blog. And then in the interim you may have noticed my blog went away for a couple of days. Because in the infinite wisdom of the internet, nominet decided to only tell me after my site had been down for 24 hours that I needed to renew my domain. So hey.

The reason I have been away is that October is the month of all the things. It’s the month of getting back into the stride of university and remembering that I have a degree to do, which this year comes with the added bonus of PhD applications (which are a joyous thing, believe me [does sarcasm work in writing?]). I’ve also been involved in producing “Into the Woods” with Music Theatre which is well on it’s way to being a top show, but is incredibly time consuming.

Then there is Halloween, which if you remember last year you’ll know is a big deal in casa de Sally and Boyfriend. So there was that. Also, among all of the other many things I have a job. Oh! One last thing. I’m cheating on this blog with another one now. It’s not live yet, but it is the LUU Backstage blog and I have been writing posts for it generally, and specifically about the SMS Cabaret for which I had the great job of being Production Manager. It was great fun and once my blog about it goes live I’ll definitely share.

In the meantime,  I really can’t promise I’ll be back here for a while, but I’ll try and pop up with fun updates from time to time. However, since my readership over the last month has overwhelmingly been Korean spammers, I doubt you’ll mind too much.

안녕 지금

Let the games begin

So, I’ve been somewhat absent for the last few days, and with very good reason. I’ve been on the panel casting for Leeds University Union Music Theatre Society’s “Into the Woods” – coincidence that this has happened at the same time Once Upon a Time has come back to our screens? I think not.

What does this all mean, other than a huge influx of fairy tales into my life? Well, it means I’ll probably be back to blogging less, what with how ridiculously busy I’ll be. It also means that what blogging is done might be very prop and costume centric (just how we like it then). I think that between my job, my degree and this show, I’ll have time for very little else, and to be honest that’s the way I like it.

So, tata for now, and I’ll be back sometime soon, probably with a post about a cow.

+-

Here are some things which are positive (+) and negative (-) about my life today. Because I genuinely couldn’t think of a better blog post.

+ I am doing work on my thesis
– My thesis work is tedious and makes me sad
+ I’m on an audition panel for a great show in a few hours
– There are some organisational issues to get sorted with said show
+ Boyfriend picked a lovely picture of us for his profile picture
– Now I can’t use it
+ I am blogging!
– I am scared of turning my HabitRPG back on and being a motivated person again
+ My friend (blog protégé…blogtégé?) is safely in her new home and blogging
– I wish I lived in her new home in Paris
+ My other best friend got an amazing offer for an amazing PhD that she will be amazing at
– I want to be offered a PhD (ideally on a plate…thanks)

I mean, life is clearly pretty good, and I’m just in the mood for a whinge. But then again, everyone is entitled to the odd whinge, aren’t they?

Three things

1. I just spelled “three” as “thriss”. This is because I am tired. This week is super busy, so please don’t expect a lot on the blog front (oh you, disembodied and possibly imaginary reader).

2. Pomegranates are the best, weirdest fruit ever, and we don’t appreciate them enough. They are like alien food. They also remind me of a book I read about 15 years ago in which some people moved to Mars or somewhere and planted wheat and then when it grew the grains were like little gemstones. Pomegranates are full of gemstones.

3. I have no idea what 3 was. I’m so tired. Bye.

Congratulations!

This weekend Boyfriend and I went to a wedding. I got to read a reading, during which I did not swear or fall over, and we had an amazing time taking instant photos and dancing the night away in a slightly odd Lithuanian-run hotel. We also stayed in the perfect B&B, right in the middle of the Surrey wilderness. I think it’s fair to say that words can’t really do it all justice, so have a picture-diary instead.

whatawonderfulwedding

Yes, I actually managed to do that with my hair. And it totally stayed. I may be a god.

Term Looms Again

This weekend and next week I am off on a jolly, and may not be blogging much (depending on if anything interesting happens I may recount it later).

Then, term begins again at university. Given I am doing a research masters course, I haven’t technically cared about terms and such frippery, but being so involved in various student groups and societies, the start of term still feels quite significant to me. This will be my 6th consecutive year studying at Leeds (though of course I had a year living in Morocco, as we all remember). I wanted to take a moment to just reflect on how long and important a time the last 5 years have been for me.

Firstly, it is LONG. More than a 5th of my life, which is a big ol’ chunk of life.

I’ve lived in 3 different countries, visited countless more. I’ve had 4 different jobs, or 5 counting my internship at the British Council.

I have finished one degree and am onto my second, with hopes that I may even get a third before this time next year. A girl can have dreams.

Boyfriend came into my life almost exactly 5 years ago, and while we’ve had our fair share of stumbles and troubles, I couldn’t be happier that he’s stuck around.

I’ve been lucky enough to be on two society committees, direct two shows, produce three shows, work behind the scenes on countless others, and own what must be coming on for 20 different show hoodies.

All in all, it’s been a really busy exciting and interesting 5 years, in which I’ve made new friends, seen new places, had new experiences, and learnt more than I could ever have imagined learning when I came to Leeds. I somewhat naively thought I was coming here just to get a degree – what a fool. Here’s to the next 5 (or at least 1 more).
