Hob-nobbing

Did I say I’m still in Morocco? I’m still in Morocco. I miss the rain in Fes already because I’m now living in Rabat for three weeks and doing a month internship at the British Council here. The first three days have gone very well. I am working with some lovely people and doing some fairly interesting stuff, looking at the British Council Morocco website, and also joining in with some events. I’ll keep you all updated of course.

Tonight was my second night out in Rabat. The first was on Saturday, the day after the wedding when I got to see Shakira. No biggie. Oh, and also it was free.

Yes. I saw Shakira. FREE.

I’ll just let you take her in…

…So then tonight I was invited to a garden party at the house of the head of the British Council here in Morocco. It was totally lovely. I got to meet some really nice and interesting people, and I felt really included in a group which I don’t honestly know all that well yet. I was really glad for the opportunity to ‘hobnob’ a bit with the top UK people here, but the main thing that I liked about it was that it really gave me the feeling that I can learn a lot while I’m here, and make a whole new group of friends.

But, I miss the rain in Fes.

I’m just a teenage dirtbag

Time for another ‘Sally lists some music which she likes’ extravaganza. This time, I’ve decided to opt for some tunes which I adore, which I have heard or found pretty randomly, and which not many of my friends have heard. Now, I’m not in any way one of those ‘Ugh, that’s soo mainstream’ people, but I love a bit of the alternative in my life. So here we go,

All Those Pretty Lights – Andrew Belle
Back It Up – Colette Carr
Jar of Hearts – Christina Perri
Life in Letters – Lucy Schwartz
Booty Bounce – Dev
East to West – Casting Crowns
Amie – Damien Rice
Here is Gone – Goo Goo Dolls
Grapevine Fires – Death Cab For Cutie
Don’t Forget Me – Way Out West

I don’t expect you to like all of it. I realised from compiling this list that at heart I have a very definite taste in music (bar the odd track) no matter how much I say I am diverse. Even though as you can see here and here I do have some diversity in my taste, I think at the end of the day I always revert to slow, pretty songs. Enjoy.

All together now

Togetherness is an amazing thing. I hope to always have someone there for me when I need someone, and I hope that I can always be there when anyone needs me as well. This weekend I’m going away for a few days with our whole class, to Casablanca. Although I’m not a huge fan of the city I’m sure we’re going to have a really fun time. It made me think a lot about how nice it is that our class has grown together so much. I feel like I’ve really gained a group of friends through living out here, and with people I might not normally have made friends with automatically.

Speaking of togetherness, these are the ultimate songs from musicals. (Don’t argue, I think it follows on perfectly)

Loathing – Wicked
Still Hurting – The Last 5 Years
Don’t Cry for Me Argentina – Evita
Nothing – A Chorus Line
On The Street Where You Live – My Fair Lady
Class – Chicago
Think Of Me – Phantom of the Opera
Papa Can You Hear Me – Yentl
Little Girls – Annie
Castle on a Cloud – Les Miserables

And a special mention, for someone who I know will appreciate it

Footloose – Footloose (obviously)

This little piggie went ‘wee wee wee wee’ all the way home

Everyone seems to have gone home over the course of this week. And by everyone, I mean 3 people, but it still feels like our class is empty. I almost want to hop on a plane myself.

In other news, I am procrastinating. My motivation has gone down the drain this week for some reason, and the idea of doing homework just doesn’t appeal, much less the idea of revising for the 4 quizzes I have next week. It all seems a little pointless considering the grades I had last term.

You see, I did well. Very well in fact. But, I couldn’t see where I was being given a higher grade than other members of the class for my participation, attendance, and quizzes. Otherwise known as coursework. Considering it counts for more than 50% of the grades, I was disappointed that I might as well have just turned up for the exams. I am a big fan of the carrot method, which is to say, you reward people who do well. I feel lacking of reward just now.

Here is some music you should listen to. (following on from here)
Breakeven – The Script
99 Problems – JayZ
Better – Regina Spektor
Now You’re Gone – Basshunter
Sympathy – Goo Goo Dolls
The Professor and La Fille Danse – Damien Rice
Back It Up – Caro Emerald
There She Goes – Sixpence None The Richer
Rain Down – Delerious?
Til I Collapse – Eminem
Starlight – Muse
Life in Letters – Lucy Schwartz
Fireflies – Owl City
Price Tag – Jessie J

Enjoy.

Playlist

Everyone has favourite music. If you were to twist my arm for a favourite band, I’d say blink-182, who I have loved since I was about 13. If I thought some more, I might change to Death Cab For Cutie, who are also very good. But the truth is that I am not a fan of bands, or musicians, I’m just a fan of music. So, here is the first installment of my ultimate playlist.

Hey Soul Sister – Train
Can’t Buy Me Love – The Beatles
Wonderful – Victoria Hart
The Writer – Ellie Goulding
East To West – Casting Crowns
The Lark Ascending – Ralph Vaughan-Williams
One of Us – Joan Osborne
Still Hurting – The Last Five Years
Africa – Toto
Adiemus – Adiemus
Kids – MGMT
Need You Now – Lady Antebellum
You Raise Me Up – Celtic Woman
Swing Life Away – Rise Against

I’m bored now. More to follow, oh so much more.
